Before you get started in waterskiing, it’s important to acknowledge the importance of safety in this sport. There’s no doubt that this sport is dangerous, and a little bit of fun is never worth risking your life. Thus, the first step in preparing to waterski is to familiarize yourself with all the best safety practices. This means having hand signals for communication with the driver, understanding the best methods for getting started, and knowing how to handle yourself in the event of a fall.

The act of getting started is relatively simple. Most water skiers start in a sitting position in the water and wait for the boat to start moving, As you hold onto the bar, the forward motion of the boat should naturally pull you up into s standing position. At this point, all you need to do is keep your arms straight, bend your knees slightly, and keep your balance. If you can maintain this position until the boat gets up to its cruising speed, then you should have no trouble staying up for the long haul. Just remember to keep your knees bent in order to absorb all those bumps and waves.

When stopping, let go of the rope and allow yourself to slow at a smooth rate. It’s not a good idea to try to steer to the dock or any other object, as it’s easy to underestimate your speed, and you may end up hitting the object faster than you expect.

Once you get the hang of it, you’ll find that waterskiing is surprisingly easy. All you have to do is hold onto the bar, and the boat pulls you along rather comfortably. Of course, the simple act of holding onto to the bar can be a slight challenge, especially if you’re a newcomer to the sport. It puts a surprising strain on your arms and on your grip.

It’s important to give yourself time to get the hang of things. Most waterskiing instructors recommend spending a good deal of time just riding straight behind the boat before you try to do any complicated maneuvers or ride out sharp turns.

To become a comfortable water skier, you have to be comfortable falling down sometimes. Especially in the beginning, you’ll want to have this capability so that you can safely bail out when things get frightening. Staying upright is the ideal, but if you can’t manage that, falling backward is always best.
