Role of Women in Society
Women have been greatly seen as the eyes of the society for many years, and with the evolution and changes in generations and periods, their positions too have changed in the society. The perspective by which people used to consider them in the society as mothers, wives, who were only intended to cook, to clean the compounds and to take care of the children is partially fading. The women is the ancient times lived at the mercies of their husbands who did not even give them a chance of being part of decision process, contributing to the family expenditure and lastly even doing paid jobs.
All those were the responsibility of the man. (McDermott and Sayers, 2005) The changing role of women as is highlighted in the movie of Persepolis, Marji representing that case of changing roles, still at an early age and in a country where women are only regarded as home makers and keepers-Iran, she starts dreaming of a bigger career in life, careers that are mostly practiced by the Iranian men- male dominated career, and she doesn’t regret. Marji dreams of being a prophet, the job which was and still in many communities left for men, and being an emulator of Bruce Lee, a male character.
This affects her life, education, career and the twists that take place in her life later. The changing role of women is highlighted here. http://www. metacritic. com/film/titles/persepolis). The life of the two ladies in the Kite runner during the search for Osama in Afghanistan proves the lives women are exposed to. ( http://www. imdb. com/title/tt0419887) With the changes that have been experienced in the society and more so in relation to the roles of women and what the community thought of the women.
The women have tried to prove to the societies that, they have the same rights a s other members of the same society-women and can even deliver more than men if Given chance. They have come from and still some face discriminations while raising their voices into the societal affairs and other home affairs. ( Rader and Et al, 1972) The roles of women in the society are so many and checking at the normal societal setup, the roles have also been changed form women being the homemakers to women taking other careers and jobs seriously.
This is still in addition to their caring natures of caring for their families and managing the grater work load of their families. Hence they are the makers of their men and homes. The number of women that are nowadays career women has greatly increased and this with the family responsibilities and the societal expectation of a woman has added on them a lot of stress that men. Many women nowadays have added a lot of roles in their lives because of the levels and the standards of their education that they are free to advance.
The twist and turns in the Marji’s life of being removed from her country to another country to escape arrest because of her being outspoken in Public and without fear opens a lot of avenues for women, although she lived in a society where women were only to be seen and not to be heard she proved to be bold enough to threaten a sexist in public, here boldness is also seen when she blankly tells the taxi driver in France that she is from Iran. Although the changing roles of women are being felt in the society, workplace and in the educational institutions, they still exposed to the glass ceiling concept. The women at the work place are only being seen to be holding the lower positions, they have no opportunity to climb the leadership ladder and be at the top of the men. This also has been promoted by the government policies that promote men as compared to women. The country has placed a lot of inequalities and issues that are affecting the women from enjoying the bigger positions in the national offices and administration.
The nature of the society puts a lot of seniority to the men as compared to the women, and always senior positions are related to the presence of men. (McDermott and Sayers, 2005) Women are faced with more responsibly than men but also are faced with a lot more problems than men because they are looked at like a woman a bearer of children. It is a fact that men shouldn’t abuse their wives and its true, but they still are. Men tend to live all the children work and responsibly for the mother and they take very little role in. women especially young ladies in society are faced with another problem of abortion.
After conceiving their boyfriends tend to live them to decide weather to carry the children or to abort. (McDermott and Sayers, 2005) The United States still seems to be reluctant, to grant true equality to women even in the twenty-first century. In the United States women are still not equal to men. In the workplace, women do not receive the same benefits and freedoms that men do. Some women do the same job, for the same amount of hours, and still do not receive the same pay for their work. This treatment of women has no clear grounds for its explanation but the treatment is just because of the equality that goes on the job place.
It is also here that one may regret being a woman, this still are being supported by the government. In the same workplace the salaries do not depend on the education standards of women but to the gender, graduate women hold the same positions as high school male and still earn the less amount of money. (McDermott and Sayers, 2005) In the media, sports games are mostly men affair, they dominate the sports jobs from their salaries to their findings, they even dominate some of the feminine duties as nursing and saloons and they still do not see it weird, yet the women are well capable of doing the same things.
Although the role of women in the society have drastically changed with time, due to the relentless efforts of some women and unions that have proved to the society that even if the women do not have the masculine, they need not to be confined and superiority to move to the men. The women contribution in the society need not to be belittled as it was. They used to be physically, mentally, and emotionally abused, belittled, embarrassed, and silenced. These are just a few examples of the emotion from the isolated treatment of the past. A woman’s role in today’s society is more valued than ever before. (McDermott, 2005)
The slow move of towards the recognition and the inequality that women face has been largely blamed on some of them, this is because most of the women belittle themselves and live at the mercy of their men, this has accelerated their positions in the society and in the workplace. The women roles in the homestead too do not give them a good chance to explore and live their dreams. ( McDermott, 2005) The position and contribution of the woman in then society has not to be overlooked for it is more precious and important contribution to the societal development and therefore women should always be treated with respect and honor.
Women are the mothers of the society. With all the changes in the life of women, their future roles can be looked at more optimistically. Nowadays, there seems to be recognition of the vital role women play in society and more status is given to women. Overall, excellent progress has been made in education. This has played a powerful role for women self-esteem. It demonstrates women’s intellectual abilities to gain expertise in the field of their choice. This is being reflected in the job market. This is so good.
