Esophagitis also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD is the inflammation of the esophagus that triggers burning in the chest and may be similar to the pain of heart disease. Esophagitis is frequently caused by the backflow of acid-containing fluid from the stomach to the esophagus INSERT INTO `cofwp_posts` VALUES (Esophagitis, 2010). This happens after one eats spicy foods, chocolate, tomatoes, oranges, and caffeinated drinks, and alcohol INSERT INTO `cofwp_posts` VALUES (Silva, 2010).

To control the affects of esophagitis one would need to change his or her diet. It is bad to say, but there are so many people that would rather deal with the discomfort and pain of heartburn than change their eating habits and not eat the spices or foods that they like so much. I believe that the most difficult part of carrying out what needs to be done to prevent this disease from occurring would be for one to have to sacrifice some of the foods or drinks that one likes a lot. Soft foods like applesauce, oatmeal soft cooked eggs and high protein shakes can help symptoms to improve INSERT INTO `cofwp_posts` VALUES (Silva, 2010).

Factors that might make the lifestyle changes difficult to accomplish would be that someone is obsessed with certain foods or drinks and does not want to change his or her diet to avoid the foods and drinks that trigger the gastroensophageal reflux disease or GERD. Another factor is that one might not have time to eat several small meals throughout the day and he or she is forced to have three large meals throughout the day. Obesity and smoking are also factors that can increase the risk for esophagitis INSERT INTO `cofwp_posts` VALUES (Esophagitis, 2011).

To overcome some of the factors that increase the risks one would have to make changes to his or her eating and drinking habits, would have to lose weight and to stop smoking. Also eating three hours before lying down to sleep is a good way to avoid a trigger of esophagitis INSERT INTO `cofwp_posts` VALUES (Esophagitis, 2011).

I would choose to make a lifestyle change and not take medications if I were diagnosed with this condition. I would try to change my eating and drinking style and avoid the medications. I do not like to take medications pills or liquid and if my condition was not severe and I could control it by making a lifestyle change, I would surely make that, the lifestyle chance and avoid the medications.
