Krav Maga Gaining in Popularity
If you have watched the Bourne serious of movies, you’ve probably marveled at the impressive, almost superhero-esque fighting moves of that series’ titular character, played by Matt Damon. Bourne is tough, aggressive, and seemingly able to knock out or kill enemies with ease. It’s easy to dismiss this kind of thing as cinematic trickery, but what you may not realize about Bourne’s fighting style is that it’s based on a real-life martial arts system known as Krav Maga, which is every bit as impressive as it looks on film.
Krav Maga, a combination of various martial arts techniques and boxing, was developed in the late 1930s in Eastern European Jewish communities as a reaction to growing Nazi aggression. Since then, the style has been adapted and employed by law enforcement and military organizations throughout the world. It’s an essential aspect of training in the Israeli military, and it’s been used by SWAT teams within police departments in places like New York City and Los Angeles.
Unlike other martial art forms, Krav Maga places an emphasis on aggression and deadly force. It isn’t one of those fighting styles meant only to be used as a last resort. There are even circumstances in which the Krav Maga philosophy promotes preemptive force and open aggression. This is a far cry from the self-defense-oriented fighting styles of the Far East.
But even though Krav Maga’s original purpose was not self-defense, a lighter form of Krav Maga has been developed for the training of beginners and amateur fighters who wish to learn the fighting style for exercise purposes. So, for example, if you go to a Krav Maga class being advertised in your local paper, you’re probably not going to learn those cool methods for knocking people out that you see Bourne movies.
Instead, you’ll learn Krav Maga’s special combination of martial arts techniques, with an emphasis on speed, quickness, and intensity. And in order to get up to speed with Krav Maga’s techniques, you’ll have to master a range of drills and repetitive exercises. This is what makes this martial art so great for people who want to learn to defend themselves while also getting some hardcore exercise.
In short, if you want to learn a style of martial arts that’s going to get you some great cardio, Krav Maga may be the style for you, but keep in mind that it’s not easy. And while you may want to learn those amazing moves from the movies, you’ll have to join the Israeli military or work your way up through the NYPD to get that type of training.
