Because of the unique posture of sitting on a bike, the movement of the legs and the thighs while driving, the basic fitness levels that need to be maintained, and to be light enough so as not to be a speed hindrance. Cycling promotes a very high level of fitness and health among sports persons.

It is a proven and well known scientific fact that cycling exercises the heart much better than running, jogging, swimming or most other sports. The rhythm of the body that is maintained while cycling and moving in the same way again and again makes the cardio muscles expand and contract easily and helps keeping those muscles and the heart healthy. It keeps the blood continuously and rhythmically pumping in our heart.

The sport of Cycling helps tone leg muscles like nothing else does. The constant circular motion of the legs while riding a bicycle make these muscles move and tone them, especially the calves. Your knees become stronger and the entire leg even more flexible. You will always find cyclist with the best pair of legs. Cycling also helps you work well on your abs and your tummy. Due to the posture and the constant bending, the movement of the legs directly affects the stomach muscles and the muscles on our back and makes them more flexible and automatically tones them.

It is essential to understand that the most important trick while cycling is to be light so that the bicycle can carry as fast as it can and your size or weight will not prove as a hindrance while thrashing through the air. Thus, cyclists need to have a very strict workout regime to keep them in good shape. They need to maintain their weight and make sure that they are light enough to ride the bike and eventually win a race. Cyclists have strenuous practicing hours, which consist of warm up sessions, work out sessions, jogging, running, even swimming and hours driving the bicycle so that they get accustomed to any hindrance they might face during the actual tournament.

But, there is another side to this. Extensive hours on the bike can prove to be dangerous to ones health. Cyclists tend to suffer from extreme levels of back problems since they stay in the same posture for hours and hours. Collisions, crashes and falls are more common in cycling than in any other sports, and these collisions and clashes can lead to very serious injuries like fractures, ligament tears, muscle pulls and others. So cyclists have to be very careful while driving and taking sharp turns as even the slightest mistake can lead to severe consequences. It is also seen that cyclists face a lot of problems due to the rigorous movement of the knee and the ankle. More often than not, the knee becomes quite stiff and troubles them in their cycling career and maybe even after wards.

Thus, rigorous training and work out sessions are very important to excel in a sport like cycling which involves the movement of almost all muscles in the body.
