In unit 2 serving orgnisations it requires me to make a case study on how the orgnisations uses ICT in their firm. The organisation that I have chosen is IBM. IBM was incorporated in the State of New York on June 15, 1911 as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Co. (C-T-R), a consolidation of the Computing Scale Co. of America, The Tabulating Machine Co. , and The International Time Recording Co. of New York. IBM got started going in the 1950’s, which will go down in history as the decade in which the disk storage industry was born and IBM led the way.
On September 13, 1956, a small team of IBM engineers in San Jose, California, introduced RAMAC(tm) (Random Access Method of Accounting and Control), the first computer disk storage system. At IBM, they strive to lead in the creation, development and manufacture of the industry’s most advanced information technologies, including computer systems, software, networking systems, storage devices and microelectronics. They translate these advanced technologies into value for their customers through their professional solutions and services businesses worldwide.
IBM is a worldwide business but was first formed in the United States. IBM’s earnings per common share of i?? 1. 33, a 10 percent decrease compared with diluted earnings per common share of i?? 1. 48 in the fourth quarter of 2000. Fourth-quarter 2001 net income was i?? 2. 3 billion, a 13 percent decrease from i?? 2. 7 billion in the year-earlier period. IBM’s fourth-quarter 2001 revenues totaled i?? 22. 8 billion, down 11 percent (8 percent at constant currency) compared with the fourth quarter of 2000. My uncle is employed by the IBM in London and I am going to investigate this company by looking at the IT departments.
I was able to interview my uncle about the business and I am going to investigate IBM by doing research in the Internet and organising interviews to find out more. The main aim of IBM is to improve the technology of computers the people are using today like for computers and to provide the customers with the best services available. They are also attending to make profit. IBM are trying to cut costs, increase margins, improve customer service, control overhead, and just about every other goal you can think of for your business.
The presidents are at the top of each of their firms that are Eli Lilly and Co, National Action Council, Duke University, Hearst Magazines, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and IBM, and at the same level of the president are the chief executive officers of American Express Co, IBM, Eli Lilly and Co, and National Action Council. Then under that layer you’ve got senior vice presidents for each departments of which are Corporate Headquarters, Technology and Manufacturing, IBM Global Services, Sales and Distribution, Software Group and Server Group.
Then under that there are general mangers of each department that consists of Server Group, Sales and Distribution, Software Group, Integration Middleware and IBM Global Services, which is my uncles department. There is also more to this hierarchy but as it is so big it wouldn’t have been able to fit on the page. Hierarchy Of IBM Global Services Department: The hierarchy of my uncles department which is IBM Global Services is at the top layer is the managers whoa re Frank J, Frank Kern, Virginia M and Ralph F then under that is the Team Leader which is Ragnath Kooner my uncle and that him is the Desktops Specialists and Desktop Analyst.
