I was staying, in Canada with my older cousin, for two weeks. They moved to Canada from Kenya about a year ago and they live one mile away from Niagara Falls in a two-bedroom apartment. It was 7 o’ clock in the morning and the sun was shining through the window and on to my face, I could feel my skin burning and suddenly I opened my eyes I was smiling because today I was leaving Canada to go to New York in America. My Dad walked in to the room and told me to get ready before 10:00am because we were leaving at that time.
I got out of bed and made my way towards the bathroom, I knocked on the door and my Mum was in the toilet, she said, “give me a second”. I waited for ten minutes and I just went back to bed I tried to go back to sleep, but not only the sun was searing through the window I could a bird singing I think it was so annoying. I looked outside the window I could see the bird on the branch opposite me, I could hear the bird chirping in many directions, so I thought that I could scare the bird and get back to sleep. When I barked at the bird, it just looked at me and carried on chirping away.
This time I was getting aggravated and I just shouted at the top of my voice “aaarrrrrrrrhhhhhhhh” and the bird flew as fast as it could. My niece came in to the bedroom and asked me what I was doing I just looked at her and said “is the bathroom free now” she said “yes”. By the time I had a bath I was choosing what to wear for the long journey ahead of me. I decided to wear my jogging bottoms, a t-shirt and my cap. The cab came about 10:15 and we loaded our luggage in to the van. Then we waved goodbye to my relatives.
I was feeling a bit upset because I was going to miss them. I was sitting at the back with my Mum; my Dad was in the front seat with the driver. I looked outside my window and I saw the train station gleaming, the driver stopped us off near the entrance. We paid the driver and made our way towards the counter. Inside the station was small it was different to the train station in Britain. Although this was an international rail track, there wasn’t any security or any barriers to stop you from boarding the train or even crossing the track.
The track itself was on the other side of the entrance and you could actually walk straight through the station to the other side and wait for the train. My Dad had sorted out the tickets and the train was about to arrive in half an hour. It was 11:00 the person at the counter announced that the train will be shortly arriving and we would have to get our tickets and luggage ready. I was at the platform, all of a sudden I could feel the ground vibrate I could see the track move about and the stones underneath it popping out.
I turned around on my left and I saw the train as it approached it was a huge beast I could see the wheels move. The train came to a stand still, five minutes later the doors of the train opened and I thought how on earth or we going to get our on the train because the train doors were above the wheels and it was at least one feet high. All of a sudden the train lowered itself with hydraulics and I could hear the train, hiss, “ssssssssssssssss”. I saw the conductor stepping out, he first stuck his head and then he stepped down where the stairs of the, train doors, entrance unfolded. I saw him go inside the station.
I asked my Dad what he was doing because no one on the platform could wait to get in to the air-conditioned carriage. I was sweating so much; my sweat was saturated in to the t-shirt. It was about 10 minutes later the conductor came out the station and then he announced, “All of the New York travellers make their way towards the third carriage. ” He then went on to say that ticket numbers one to ten were allowed in first. Our ticket was number five and we made our way towards the train doors were there was another conductor waiting to inspect the tickets. We then proceeded in to the carriage were it was cool.
I was actually feeling cold. My Mum pointed out the seats and I helped my Dad put the luggage on the top cabinet. It was 12:00pm and the train started to move, I looked outside the tinted window I saw the train approach the Rainbow bridge as it was called. The Rainbow is the businesses bridge as it leads to and from America. As the train crossed the bridge I could see Niagara Falls, it would be the last time I would see the famous Canadian Horse shoe fall. It was a beautiful sight. As the train made its way over the Rainbow Bridge, I could see a rainbow, in the mist of the great Niagara Falls.
As we approached the American side we stopped for customs check, what I thought was a short half an hour stop became a tedious two-hour halt. During that period immigration officers had to escort two people off the train. Also they brought along their dogs and they were sniffing around for dugs I think. One dog actually jumped on to one the passengers in front of me; the dog started to bark and the passenger was froze the immigration officer run towards the dog it then asked the passenger to stand up and walk outside. When the passenger left everyone on the carriage started to gossip on what happened.
I soon fell asleep. I woke up, I asked my Dad what was the time and he said it was 17:00, I asked him how long left and he didn’t know. I looked outside and I could see through outside the window and everything was whizzing past me. The train was travelling at such great speed; I saw trees just go past me in a second. I felt hungry and I told my Dad that I was going to the canteen at the back of the train. My Dad said, “be careful”. I made my way towards the canteen and I had to go through the connecting bit, where the carriage connects to another.
When I went through the doors, it was hard for me to hold my balance as the floor was shaking. On my left and right it was open and I could feel the air pass through me. I carried on walking the carriages and I had to pass about three carriages before I entered the canteen carriage at the back. I saw a huge line and I thought that it was never going to move because there was only one person working. While I was waiting in the line I was talking to an old lady, I told her where I was from and she asked me if I was enjoying my holiday so far and I said yes.
When it was my turn to order I ordered Nachos with dip and Pepsi. They did sell pizza but that was sold out. I paid $4. 95 and I made my way back to my seat. As I looked outside I could see night falling. I ate my food and I was talking to my Dad and I was telling him that I was excited. All of a sudden the conductor announced that the train would be stopping in New York City shortly. I was excited I couldn’t wait I looked outside and I could see the bright lights of the skyscrapers. I could see the reflection of the Empire State building reflecting off the river.
I could see the red, white and blue stripes on the top of the building. When we approached the underground station the train stopped and everyone rushed towards the entrance the majority of the people on my carriage were getting off which made it worse to get off the train. It was funny because at the beginning of the journey I couldn’t wait to get on the train and now I can’t to get off the train. When we did get off the train, the whole of the platform was packed, it was so stuffy inside, and we made our way towards the escalators with our luggage. At the top we were waiting for my Dad’s close friend.
